Can I contribute to the U.S. Presidential campaigns?

2008 September 16

If you are an American abroad and are unsure whether you can contribute to the U.S. Presidential campaigns, the quick answer is, “Yes”. According to the Federal Election Commission (”FEC”), all American citizens can contribute to federal election campaigns up to certain limits.

The FEC makes clear that, “Foreign nationals are prohibited from making any contributions or expenditures in connection with any election in the U.S.” However, lawful permanent residents of the U.S., so-called “green card” holders, may contribute because they are not considered foreign nationals.

If you are an American abroad and want to make a contribution to the Obama Biden campaign, please click here or on the thermometer on the left and make a contribution through the fundraising page I set up to make clear to the campaign that the donation is coming from Americans abroad, thus raising our profile in the campaign and in Washington.

I wished to send an email to Mr. Obama’s transitional office, however I discover that it will only accept comments from USA. I have therefore reproduced my email here in the hope that it might be appreciated. Mr. Obama is somewhat of a hero here in Australia.

There is a survey circulating on the web that invites you to make comment on the economic crisis. Following submission of your vote, you are then treated to a vicious diatribe on Mr. Obama’s economic policy. I consider this at best a misuse of this media. I attach the link.
